Women of Google+ : Cam Collins
As we come across amazing women in Google+, we wanted to highlight some of them and give you the opportunity to find out how fabulous they are for yourself.
Featured G+’er : Cam Collins
How did you originally get invited to Google+?
I was invited by a friend.
What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?
I love Google+ so far. People in my circles are creating/sharing links to interesting content, and I see a lot of smart commentary and discussion going on.
Of course, my favorite aspect of G+ is how simple and intuitive it is to use Circles. I often feel that I’m not being “real” on Facebook, since I have been friended by a lot of work contacts there and find myself self-censoring heavily. Of course, I know *how* to use Lists to control who has access to my content, but on FB, it takes several steps to change the privacy setting so that only certain people can see a post/photo/etc. G+ makes it easy; they *encourage* you to be thoughtful about what you share with whom, and I appreciate that.
A third benefit of G+ is its nearly seamless integration with Picasa. Love that!
How does Google+ fit into your life or career?
As a web developer and specialist in online marketing and media, it’s important for me to be on top of what’s going on on the web. I also find that I’m learning a lot from interactions with others in my field who use G+ (see my comments in the last question). Since G+ doesn’t limit the length of a post/status update, people can expand on whatever they’re talking about. I also feel that G+ isn’t saturated with the random crap you see on Facebook; fewer things get lost in the shuffle. I also find it’s working better as a networking tool than LinkedIn. I’m making connections with new people in my field.
In my personal life, once again, I love being able to have more in-depth conversations with my friends on G+, and as above, I notice that I don’t miss things as often as I do on Facebook (or Twitter, for that matter).
A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+
Not yet, but I’m sure I will.
