Meet the Writer: Lisa Cohen

One of the most vital opportunities Google+ has opened in my life is the chance to connect with so many interesting, engaging, talented and all around amazing women. One I’ve met through G+ and has touched me both with her talent at writing and genuinely friendly personality is Lisa (LJ) Cohen. Her debut young adult novel The Between is a breath of fresh air in a market full of sticky sweet teen romances – her characters are delightful, her world-building unique and best of all, her creativity leaves you clamoring for more.

While you can certainly read my review and learn exactly what I thought of her book, I think the best way to get a sense of Lisa and her novel is to experience a snippet of a recent reading Lisa gave at her local independent bookstore.

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

An active social blogger I know on Facebook invited me.

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

I am experiencing a huge increase in activity versus other social sites right now. Google+ users have taken the time to create search directories to view profiles by subject and I have met many creative and talented folks to interact with in just a short time. I have been reading quality content as well as participating in great conversation and enjoy viewing art, photos, videos, blogs all in one stream. This has made being active here very satisfying on a daily basis.}

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

I have many interests as a hobbyist so I’m all over the map. I love Google+ circles because of my varied interests. Comparing using lists on Twitter and Facebook, circles make people organizing easier.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

I have been very active on Twitter for years and have followed many people in fields that I admire. Most of these people have follower counts so big they rarely interact with me as just another random person that after a while of trying the conversation is mostly “one way”. In just 2 days of actively engaging with folks on Google+, I had a response back personally to me from someone who has thousands following him. This was about as exciting as it gets.

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

Mari Smith originally invited me.

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

Google+ has been a wonderful source of new and quality connections. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a wide variety of professionals and make honest connections with people I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get close to.

I’ve gotten in touch with some really great people who provide the types of information and services my business needs. I’ve also been able to connect with quite a few new people who are looking for the services I provide. }

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

I’m looking for honest networking and mutually beneficial connections to other entrepreneurs.

Google+ has already proven to be a great way to connect with business owners who are in need of virtual solutions for their businesses. I’ve also met some wonderful service providers looking to work virtually. It’s truly been a win win for me and my business.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

One of the pieces of free content I promote in my business is a whitepaper that helps people understand how to outsource their social media without losing control of their brand, reputation or budget.

I didn’t come to Google+ with the intention of promoting this. I came over because I was truly interested in connecting with others and forming mutually beneficial relationships.

Although I’ve never posted the links to the whitepaper anywhere except in my bio, signups have increased by 15%. I’ve already obtained one client from Google+ and have connected with a graphic designer and another social media virtual assistant who I’m certain I’ll be contracting with shortly. Those are phenomenal returns for little effort!!!

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

One of my friends (another woman), invited me after she asked if anyone wanted an invite on Google Buzz.

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

I’m really loving it. I see a lot of engaged conversation; I’m talking to a lot of people I wouldn’t normally otherwise, and I’m keeping an online diary for my baby girl.}

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

I run the site Google+ Insider’s Guide (http://googleplus.wonderhowto.com), and I provide people with as much information as possible about Google+ – who to follow, how-tos, tips and tricks, and updates.

It’s really amazing, and I’ve used Google+ to talk to a lot of different people, and hopefully turn them into friends.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

I really love that Google+ encourages creativity. I see Google+ being used to do things like hold yoga sessions, teach people to cook, create online journals, and in general, have fun in a much more social way than Facebook or MySpace ever did. And that social aspect gets translated into offline “meatspace” connections, such as Trey Ratcliff’s photowalk, or Tom Anderson meeting and bonding with his neighbor!

Where can I find more information about this fabulous woman?

Before I became involved in the Internet industry, I was in healthcare, and boy am I glad I switched careers. It’s a blast doing what I love.
