Meet the Writer: Jane Friedman

Google+ has quickly become a networking Mecca for the literary-minded. Authors both published and aspiring are able to connect with others without regard to geography in an ever-growing web of creative inspiration and motivation.  As many of these talented writers are also active on their own blogs and websites, I hope to highlight one or two blogs each month so we all can benefit from their talent and ingenuity.

Jane FriedmanJane Friedman is a full time assistant professor of e-media at the University of Cincinatti, whose blog was recently named to the Top Ten Blogs for Writers in 2011-2012.  Well-established on many social media sites, her 140,000+ followers on Twitter are often mentioned as an example of how to effectively use social media.

Jane’s blog blends her own posts about writing with reviews, suggestions, guest posts and “how to” articles. One post I enjoyed, How Social Media can Change your Life, offers personal stories of engaging relationships to counter the claim that social media is only about blatant self-promotion. Another helpful post, The Big Mistake of Author Websites and Blogs, discusses the major mistake that authors sometimes make when using blogging platforms for author sites, then explaining exactly how to alter the site to make it user-friendly. Friedman’s talent extends beyond the content of her writing- her informative and instructive posts communicate new information without imparting any sense of condescension on the reader.

My favorite feature of her blog is the Free Advice for Writers which includes Jane’s blog posts and links to other articles and publications she recommends.  In exploring a variety of blogs and websites published by some of the delightful women active on Google+, I found Jane’s website a perfect blend of informative and engaging.

To learn more, circle Jane on Google+ and visit her website.

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

I was lucky enough to get invited by one of my nerdy butt friends!

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

It is an exciting new platform that makes you want to learn the ins and outs as quickly as possible! It makes me excited and nauseous at the same time!

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

I own a social media marketing company called Little Blog Dress. It is important for me to learn about any new trends and platforms so when they finally come out with business pages, I will be able to teach my clients the benefits of Google + and their business! I also blog about social media that is pink and women friendly and this opens up a whole new area to write about.

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

I was invited by an old colleague named Kaspars Leines, he thought I could benefit from using Google Plus for my business. We often talk about Seo and social media stategies in our own circle.

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

I am building a bigger network than I have had in any other platform thus far. I like the circle features for targeting groups. This is helpful since I work in non profit, I can target donors, members and volunteers separately.

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

I will be using it more as I learn the extra features. I find it practicle because it links to most everything else that I do, I will be able to target specific groups for collecting donations.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

I have many of them. I think people have forgotten how to be socially responsible and I am hoping that Google will be the answer to this growing concern.I think Google itself needs to be more socially responsible as well, this naming issue is setting a bad precedent and is something that I feel is unsafe for women.

I was born and raised in the Southwest area of Montreal in a suburb called Verdun. Verdun is a working class diversified community with a huge Irish population. My family has deep Irish roots in the community and it is here that I learned the value of hard work, respect and tolerance for others. Life is not something you get, it is something that you earn.

Currently, I am a professional blogger, SEO content writer, social media manager and marketer. My educational background consists of a D.E.C from Dawson College in Community Recreation and Leadership with two Associate degrees in Computer User Support and Computer Networking Concepts.

In the past two years, I have completed over five training courses and thirty webinars associated with social media, SEO and online marketing. During this time, I have written numerous blogs for numerous different companies, each with a different topic and targeted niche. I have created SEO website content, videos and well over 25 WordPress blogs and mini sites for small business.

My passion for writing began as a hobby, but has now developed into a successful online business. Two years ago, I decided to start my own free lance business, Seo-Socialmedia is the result of that effort.

They say, “An image is worth a thousand customers” and for SEO-socialmedia this means creating blogs, articles, SEO and Social Media Marketing without the use of any Black Hat tactics. It is our belief that you cannot cut corners when it comes to effective branding, social media and SEO techniques. We use only white hat SEO techniques, they may take longer to achieve, but they produce more effective long lasting results.

I believe that when I write, I create my own voice and it is that magical moment when I find that voice, the writing begins. That gives me an idea……….I have to go write, see you soon!

Here are some of my favorite blogs I have written if your curious. Happy Reading!

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

A friend working at Google.

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

How our everyday google usage is being integrated into a social networking platform is beneficial to simplifying our interests with the online community.

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

It’s like any other social networking site, but the advantage is that you have the option to build ‘circles’ to get messages send to the right individuals more appropriately. For an example, it’d be easier to invite your circles to events as for Facebook it’s hard to weed out who you want invited (due to work/co-worker circumstances, out of city, country, etc., social circles) and such. That goes likewise with your personal life and career. Google+ allows you to compartmentalize different parts of your life whether it may be work, school, religious practice, personal, etc.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

I’m interested to see how boutiques.com would be integrated into Google+

How did you originally get invited to Google+?

I was invited by one of my friends on Facebook. Ironic, huh?

What benefits are you seeing from being in Google+?

I’ve been able to connect with a lot of business people who I would not have had the opportunity to meet on any other social network. The hybrid design of G+ brings together the best of Facebook and Twitter.

How does Google+ fit into your life or career?

As I continue to revamp my blog, I hope that G+ will allow for good discussion from users. I have also used G+ to query business people to share that feedback with my accounting students.

A particularly interesting story or thoughts you may want to add regarding Google+

I love the creativity and brainpower currently on G+. It’s a great place to share ideas without flaming.
